Cosmetics & detergents sector: Cycleco creates the USEtox® platform
In the aftermath of the Grenelle Environment Forum and the implementation of environmental labeling for consumer products, assessing the environmental impacts of consumer goods, generated over the whole of their life cycles, has become a necessity. Cycleco was mandated to work on the application of the USEtox® model, of which Dr. Jerome Payet is one of the creators, to develop ecotoxicological characterization factors for some of the substances found in the shampoo, cosmetics and detergents sectors.
In this context, Cycleco has created the USEtoxR platform, which allows the players of the cosmetics and detergents industries to participate in the development of the method, to calculate new characterization factors and to obtain data at the source of the characterization factors calculation.
The steps of this project are:
- Launch of the industrial consultation group on the application of the USEtox model to the sector of cosmetics and detergents ingredients.
- Development of a USEtox* web platform allowing the calculation of characterization factors, the traceability of source data and their continued improvement.
- Drafting of a user’s guide on the USEtox model for the sector of cosmetics and detergents ingredients.

*USEtox web platform has been marketed since January 2013; manufacturers wishing to use it will be able to apply for a license with Emmanuel Maillard.
